Number of cows on February 1: the most dairy areas are still reducing the number of livestock

As of February 1, there are 1,552.7 thousand cows in Ukraine, which is 6.6% less than in February last year.

This was reported by analyst of the Association of Milk Producers Yana Linetska.

423.7 thousand heads were housing at agricultural enterprises, which is 0.2% or 0.9 thousand more than last year. At the same time, in 2018, industrial farms housing 9.4% more cows than today.

In total, the number of cows in 10 oblasts has increased. The largest increase occurred in the Western regions: Transcarpathia (+ 16.7%; 0.7 thousand), Ternopil (+ 9.1%; 14.4 thousand), Chernivtsi (+ 9.1%; 2.4 thousand). ) area.

The expert notes that most cows are housing in industrial farms in Poltava (54.1 thousand; -0.7%), Cherkasy (42.7 thousand; -1.4%) and Chernihiv (39.2 thousand; - 1%) areas. As we can see, although number of cows have increased in areas with low concentrations, traditional livestock centers continue to decline. These trends suggest that we can now hope for a stabilization of the cow population, but it is too early to talk about increasing it.

As of February 1, there were 1,129,000 head of households, which is 8.9% or 110.3 thousand less than in the same period last year. The number of cows in the sector has fallen by more than a quarter in the last five years. And this trend will continue in the coming years. Most cows were quit in households in Zaporizhia (-27.3%, 23.4 thousand), Dnipropetrovsk (-23.4%; 41 thousand) and Sumy (-21.7%; 29.2 thousand) regions.

Yana Linetska emphasizes that according to the forecasts of the IFCN (International Farm Comparison Network) in the Dairy Report 2021, by 2030 the fastest growing segment in Ukrainian dairy farming will be dairy farms with more than 1,000 cows - the volume of cows on such farms , according to IFCN experts, will be more than 20% (in 2021: less than 5% of the population). Such tendencies to the consolidation, industrialization and increase of manufacturability and environmental friendliness of dairy farms in Ukraine completely coincide with world trends not only in terms of the struggle to optimize the cost of raw milk production at constantly rising prices for input resources, but also given the requirements for Achieve "carbon-neutral cattle breeding" in 2050.

Discussion of the topic of challenges for Ukrainian dairy farming related to the global goals of "carbon neutrality" - will continue during the 15th International Dairy Congress on February 28 - March 1 in the discussion round "Energy Independence of Ukraine" (KyivExpoPlaza, Amsterdam, 1, Berezivka village, Kyiv region). Moderator: Hanna Lavreniuk, Director General of the Association of Milk Producers. In addition, we will consider the practical experience of implementing energy efficient technologies of Ukrainian and American enterprises.
